Fantasy Story Generator

This fantasy story generator gives you a fantasy plot, not finished prose: a hero, a goal, a conflict, a magical setting, the spark, a twist and the stakes. Lock what you like and reroll the rest.

Free · No signup · No AI · Plots stay in your browser

A hedge witch living under a borrowed name wants to win the heart of someone way out of their league, but a storm cuts them off from help. Setting: a kingdom where magic is taxed like salt. It all starts when a dragon egg hatches in their care. Twist: The safe place is where the danger began. If they fail, they lose themselves.

What This Fantasy Story Generator Gives You

Every click builds a fantasy plot from seven parts. The hero, the setting and the event that starts it all come from lists written only for fantasy: 12 heroes, 10 settings and 10 openings. The goal, the conflict, the twist and the stakes come from lists shared with the other genres. Multiply the list sizes and you get 777,600,000 possible fantasy plots.

Above the seven parts, the generator joins them into one paragraph you can copy. No AI writes any of it, and your results never leave your browser. Your browser does the shuffling.

How to Use It

  1. Leave the genre on Fantasy. It is already selected. You can switch to another genre at any time.
  2. Click Generate a Plot. You get seven parts and a one-paragraph summary.
  3. Lock and reroll. Keep the parts you like. Click again and only the rest changes.

Fantasy Plot Examples

Three fantasy plots, copied exactly as the generator made them.

Example 1: A disgraced royal cartographer wants to get even with the person who ruined them, but the law is on the wrong side. Setting: a port town at the edge of the known map. It all starts when their shadow starts acting on its own. Twist: They caused the very problem they're trying to fix. If they fail, an innocent person goes to prison.

Example 2: The youngest heir of a fallen house wants to win back the trust of someone they hurt, but their health is starting to fail. Setting: a valley where winter never ends. It all starts when the kingdom's protective wards fall overnight. Twist: Everyone else already knows the secret. If they fail, their name becomes a warning.

Example 3: A retired monster hunter wants to finish what their mentor started, but nobody believes a word they say. Setting: a floating archipelago held together by iron chains. It all starts when a dragon egg hatches in their care. Twist: The real target was never them. If they fail, the one person who understood them is gone.

Each one leaves the hard questions to you: why this hero, why now, and how the twist was hidden until it wasn't.

Fantasy Settings in the Lists

The setting does a lot of the work in fantasy. A few of the 10 settings the generator can give you:

Each of these comes with a question built in. Who keeps the giant asleep? Who collects the tax on magic, and what happens to people who can't pay? If a setting grabs you, lock it and reroll everything else until the hero and the conflict fit it.

The heroes are written the same way: a disgraced royal cartographer, an apprentice who can't cast a single spell, a dragon-bone smuggler, a knight who swore off violence. None of them is the chosen one, and that is on purpose. A hero who starts with a problem is easier to write than one who starts with a destiny.

Pair It With a Title and a Backstory

Once you have a plot, give your hero a past with the DnD backstory generator, which uses fantasy lists for origin, family, defining moment and skill. Then find a name for the book with the book title generator: set it to Fantasy and it gives you eight titles at a time. To try other genres, go back to the plot generator on the home page.
